Mwatate Children's Home

The Mwatate Children’s Home in Southern Kenya is a safe haven currently housing over 40 children, age 5-18. The children are all orphans, do not have a home or family to live with, or do not feel safe in their home. The Home was founded by and is still directed by local gemstone dealers who sought for a way to give back to the region that gives them gems.

A Home Made by Gems

The children have secure surroundings, 3 meals per day, camaraderie with friends, and activities and sports. Our annual commitment sponsors all secondary school age students to attend school ($550 per year).

FAQ

According to the Education Policy and Data Center, only 26% of Kenyan students graduated from secondary schools. Gem Legacy believes that providing this education to the children is key to their future success, earning power, and opportunities for growth.

Secondary school is not government funded in Kenya, so it is the responsibility of the parents or guardians, or in this case Children’s Home administrators, to pay for school fees. The fee is upwards of $550 per year per student. Gem Legacy supports whatever amount the children’s home is unable to pay.

The home is licensed with the government, which places children in the home’s care for a variety of reasons including incarceration, physical or substance abuse, death or incapacity to care for children.
