Gem Faceting Training

Skills That Shape a Brighter Future

In East Africa, gemstones are part of daily life. Miners uncover them, traders transport them, and communities rely on them, yet few young adults ever have the chance to learn the specialized skills needed to transform rough gems into faceted gems, ready for the global market.

Gem Legacy’s Gem Faceting School provides that opportunity.

Students gain hands-on, professional training that leads to fulfilling work, higher earning capacity, and long-term career stability.

Faceting training is a direct bridge to meaningful employment.

Why Faceting Matters

For many young adults in mining regions, available work can be unpredictable and physically demanding. Faceting offers a technical skill set that builds stability and opens the door to careers with steady earning potential.

Students who receive proper training gain the ability to:

  • cut gemstones with the precision of international standards
  • increase the value of each stone they work with
  • qualify for employment with established gem cutters
  • build their own businesses
  • contribute meaningfully to an industry rooted in their communities
Faceting increases both skill and opportunity in a field that is quickly growing with large demand both from the Tanzanian government and from international gemstone buyers.

How Training Works

Students enrolled in the Gem Faceting School receive:

Hands-on instruction from trained experts

Access to professional cutting and polishing equipment
Guidance in shaping, finishing, and assessing gemstones

Mentorship in real-world gem industry practices
Career preparation and introductions to potential employers
stable, safe, clean environment
Support and housing during interviews and probationary employment periods

This program is designed for students with curiosity and drive. Academic scores are not the determining factor; in fact, most students’ test scores disqualified them to continue in traditional higher education. By graduation, students are prepared for entry-level work in gemstone cutting houses or to begin freelancing with local buyers.

Student Success

Meet Hosea

Hosea received a Gem Legacy scholarship and trained as a gemstone cutter — a skill he quickly discovered he was meant for. Today he works full-time, supporting himself and his family.

“I’m happy to have a job as opposed to staying in the streets and doing nothing,” he says.
His next goal: becoming an international-standard cutter and eventually a gem broker.
