College Scholarships

Launching Careers

Completing secondary school is a major achievement for students in mining communities and, for most, it’s where their education stops. Our goal is to make it only the beginning! College, university, and vocational programs open the door to specialized skills, higher earnings, and long-term career stability. Yet the cost of attending these programs puts them far out of reach for almost all Tanzanian families.

Gem Legacy’s College Scholarship Program ensures that students with the talent and drive to continue their education have the opportunity to keep going, making higher education a reality instead of a dream.

A college scholarship does more than pay tuition — it is holistic support and guidance to launch youth into a thriving career. Culturally, Tanzanians see work simply as a job, a source of income. We love debunking this: work can be fulfilling too!

Why College & Vocational Training Matter

Higher education and/or technical training gives students the tools to:

  • gain skills that make them employable
  • move into stable, fulfilling jobs
  • compete for higher-earning roles
  • pursue leadership positions within their field
  • contribute to the growth and professionalism of the gemstone industry and beyond

Tuition, fees, housing, transportation, and supplies create a financial barrier that students and their families cannot overcome on their own – this is why only 2% of Tanzanians attend college.
When these costs are covered, students move from hoping for a career into building one.

What a College Scholarship Provides

Each scholarship covers the essentials a student needs to enter and complete their program, and a key element to their success upon completion. This includes:
  • tuition
  • fees
  • books and materials
  • program-specific tools or equipment
  • room and board
  • transportation support (as needed)
  • a graduation gift that overcomes any initial barriers to obtaining work, such as driver’s license fees and local tour operator memberships for tourism students, a sewing machine for tailors, and a set of tools for car mechanics.

This support allows students to fully participate in their studies without the interruptions or uncertainty that financial strain creates.

Impact

Turning Potential Into Professional Pathways

Students who earn college or vocational scholarships use their training to build futures that provide stability for themselves and their families. Gem Legacy Graduates are now employed in the following fields:
  • gemstone faceting
  • tailoring
  • secretarial work
  • teaching
  • car mechanic transportation

Many return to their home communities as skilled professionals, creating a ripple effect of opportunity for younger students who follow in their footsteps and the type of systemic change we’re looking for that sees education as an opportunity.

How the New Campus Expands College Pathways

Gem Legacy’s now-under-construction Campus in Arusha will significantly expand access to higher-level training — especially in gemology and gemstone faceting. It will provide:

modern classrooms

expert instruction

Faceting and gemology labs

dormitory housing

student support

The campus will allow more students to receive specialized, industry-recognized training at a fraction of the traditional cost — creating a direct pipeline from secondary school → vocational training → meaningful careers.

College scholarships will continue to house and support students enrolled in external programs, preparing them holistically for their first jobs and successful careers through mentoring, interview preparation, tutoring, and more.

Global Goals Alignment

College and vocational scholarships support:

SDG 4: Quality Education

SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

By equipping students with higher-level skills, these scholarships strengthen both the gemstone sector and the economies of the broader gem-mining communities.
