Gem Legacy Adventures is dedicated to bringing curious world travelers and gem lovers to visit the artisanal gem mining communities of East Africa. Our Adventures are centered on the initiatives of Gem Legacy in Tanzania and Kenya and exploring the surrounding culture and national parks. Our hope is for you to leave with an appreciation of the unique and vibrant culture of East Africa and the hard work of artisanal gemstone miners.

Day 1 — Arrival in Nairobi, Kenya

  • Arrival flights and overnight stay in Nairobi

Day 2 — Nairobi Safari & City Time

  • Morning safari in Nairobi National Park.
  • Afternoon free time to relax and enjoy the hotel’s rooftop pool.

Day 3 — Travel to Voi & Community Visit

  • Early train from Nairobi to Taita Taveta County (Voi).
  • Afternoon visit to Mwatate Children’s Home.

Day 4 — Southern Kenya Mine Tours (Day 1)

  • Visit active gem mines expected to produce Tsavorite Garnet and Green Tourmaline.
  • Physical difficulty: Easy to Medium (varies by site).

Day 5 — Southern Kenya Mine Tours (Day 2) & Transfer to Tanzania

  • Second day of mine visits in Southern Kenya.
  • Afternoon drive across the border to Marangu, Tanzania, at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 6 — Kilimanjaro Sunrise & Tanzanite Mining Experience

  • Sunrise view of Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Guided walking tour of Marangu village and introduction to Chagga culture.
  • Tour and descend into a continually operating Tanzanite mine.
  • Physical difficulty: Hard.

Day 7 — Service Day at Kitarini Primary School

  • Participate in an activity day alongside students and teachers.
  • Experience firsthand how school meals, supplies, and support programs impact learning.

Day 8 — Travel to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

  • Morning drive to the Ngorongoro Crater region.
  • Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the lodge and pool.

Day 9 — Full-Day Safari in the Ngorongoro Crater

  • Explore one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Full-day game drive with picnic lunch.

Day 10 — Return to Arusha & Afternoon Options

  • Morning drive to Arusha, Tanzania.
  • Visit the new Gem Legacy Campus
  • Afternoon free with optional activities:
    • walking or light hiking
    • art museum & shopping excursion
    • lodge and pool time

Day 11 — Local Markets, Vocational Training Visit & Departure

  • Visit the Maasai Market for crafts and local goods.
  • Tour the Gem Legacy Gem Faceting School in Arusha.
  • Evening departures from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Single Room: $5,850 USD per person
Double Room: $5,400 USD per person

Deposit & Payment Schedule

  • Deposit: $800 USD per person due at registration
  • Final Payment: Remaining balance due 12 weeks before travel
  • Roommate matching is available upon request.

Cancellation Policy

Travelers may cancel and receive a full refund, including the deposit, up to 12 weeks prior to departure. Within 12 weeks, the team will attempt to fill your spot; if successful, you’ll still receive a full refund.

Flight Details

Gem Legacy does not provide airfare. Travelers may book any airline or schedule that meets the trip timing guidelines.

Arrival Guidelines

Your flight should arrive at the designated airport (typically Nairobi, NBO) on or before the arrival date specified in your trip packet.

Departure Guidelines

Departures should be scheduled after the stated time on the final trip day (typically from Kilimanjaro, JRO), or you may choose to depart the following day. Travelers arriving or departing outside the recommended flight window may incur an additional airport transportation fee. Note: Recommended group flights will be provided for each trip, but you are welcome to choose your own airline or travel schedule.

Additional Travel Information

  • You do not need to be a member of the jewelry industry to participate.
  • Travelers are responsible for completing visa applications for Tanzania and Kenya. Instructional emails will guide you through each step.
  • Pre-trip checklists, packing guidance, and preparation emails are sent in the months leading up to departure.
  • For select days with limited dining options (such as mine tours), travelers will be advised to pack snacks. This will be clearly noted in pre-trip communications.

Who can join a Gem Legacy Adventure?
Anyone is welcome to join. You do not need to be part of the jewelry or gemstone industry. Our groups include travelers, educators, artists, families, and professionals of all kinds who want to explore East Africa, its gemstone regions, and the communities Gem Legacy supports.
Most activities require moderate fitness. Mine visits may include walking on uneven terrain, climbing, or entering tunnels with guidance from local teams. Safari days and cultural visits are generally easier. A detailed activity guide is provided before the trip so you can prepare comfortably.

If you cancel at least 12 weeks before departure, you will receive a full refund, including your deposit.

If you cancel within the 12-week window, we will attempt to fill your spot. If we are successful, you will still receive a full refund.

After signing up, you’ll receive a comprehensive pre-trip packet that includes:

  • a detailed itinerary
  • packing list
  • arrival and departure instructions
  • visa and vaccination guidance
  • safety notes and cultural expectations
  • FAQs specific to that year’s itinerary

You’ll also receive a series of instructional emails leading up to your trip.

Group size varies but is typically small enough to remain personal and comfortable, often between 7 to 14 travelers. This allows meaningful interactions with miners, students, and community partners.
Yes. Safety is a priority. We partner with trusted local guides, drivers, and community leaders in each region. Your itinerary avoids areas considered high-risk, and professional staff accompany the group throughout the journey.

Your registration packet outlines the exact inclusions for your trip.

Accommodations include a mix of hotels and safari lodges selected for comfort, safety, and proximity to activities. Rooms include private bathrooms, hot water, mosquito nets, and hotel-style amenities. Lodging quality ranges from simple, clean, and comfortable to upscale safari accommodations.

Mine visits vary by gemstone type and activity level. Some require short hikes or descents into tunnels, while others take place at surface-level pits. You’ll be guided by local miners and given safety briefings at each site. Protective gear is provided when required.

Travelers require visas for both Kenya and Tanzania. We provide clear instructions and links in the pre-trip packet. Vaccination requirements vary based on your country of origin; yellow fever and routine travel vaccines are most commonly recommended. Always consult your doctor well in advance.
Yes. Several afternoons during the trip are intentionally left open so you can rest, enjoy the lodge, shop, or choose from optional activities.
Your participation directly supports Gem Legacy’s programs. Trip fees help sustain initiatives such as school meals, miner toolkits, safety training, scholarships, and the new Campus. You will see these programs firsthand and meet the people who lead them.
Yes. Many travelers choose to invest further after seeing the impact in person. Opportunities range from sponsoring miner toolkits to supporting students, classrooms, or campus facilities. Staff can help guide you if you’re interested.
