Miner Outreach

Empowering Miners

Tools, Training, and Safety for Long-Term Success

Artisanal miners in East Africa often work with worn-out farming tools or improvised equipment. Their work is hard, unpredictable, and dangerous because of outdated tools, a lack of safety training, and the long and unrelenting road to gemstone production.

Gem Legacy is committed to changing that. Through Miner Toolkits, safety training, and gemological knowledge, we’re investing in the people who bring gemstones into the world — valuing their lives, dignity, and long-term success.

And, because as many as 50-70% of small mining operations shut down before reaching gemstones, the right tools can make the difference between giving up early and building a sustainable livelihood.

How Miner Outreach Works

Gem Legacy’s miner outreach is built on one simple idea: listen first, respond second. Every mining community is different, and the challenges miners face vary from region to region—even from one pit to another. That’s why our approach is intentionally nimble and responsive rather than pre-packaged.

Instead of delivering identical kits everywhere we go, our team meets directly with miners, asks what would make their work safer and more productive, and then builds support around their real needs. No two toolkits are the same, because no two mining sites are the same.

Recent outreach puts our approach to work:

  • At one newly opened mine, the request was simple: they didn’t need headlamps but they did need extra first-aid kits.
  • At another mine, the needs were completely different—tarps, mattresses, and boots—so miners could stay dry, rest between shifts, and protect their feet in unstable terrain.

These stories aren’t outliers. They’re reminders that meaningful change comes from meeting people where they are, adapting with them, and offering tools that match the realities of their daily work. Because when miners have the right equipment—equipment that actually fits their circumstances—they can work more safely, more efficiently, and with a greater chance of earning a consistent income.

This flexible, people-centered model is what makes Gem Legacy’s miner outreach effective. It’s practical. It’s collaborative. And it evolves with every mine we visit.

What WE Do

Miner Toolkits

  • Over 1,000 toolkits delivered to date across East Africa.
  • Each toolkit includes safe hand tools, replacing broken or improvised farming tools that miners frequently rely on.
  • Toolkits are only distributed to mines that operate without generators or ongoing access to explosives— ensuring that our support aligns with the scale and safety level of the mining operation.

Ongoing Community Partnership

  • We collaborate with trusted partners on the ground to assess which mines most urgently need support and meet our stringent qualifications.
  • Toolkits and training are targeted to miners who lack financial resources or outside support — the most vulnerable 20% of mining operations, according to internal assessments.

Why This Work Matters

75–80% of colored gemstones originate from artisanal small-scale miners — a sector that often relies on rudimentary tools and informal methods.
Artisanal mining without safety measures can lead to serious health risks; we’re reducing risk and increasing the longevity of their careers
By combining safer tools, protective equipment, and education, Gem Legacy helps miners increase their success rate.

Together, we are making an investment in miner safety, livelihood, and community well-being.

Impact Highlights

What We’ve Achieved

  • 1,000+ toolkits delivered to artisanal miners across East Africa.
  • Every mine we’ve visited has upgraded from makeshift or broken tools to safer hand tools and supplies.
  • Strong community trust built through local partnerships and equitable distribution of resources.

Miner Outreach FAQs

How many toolkits have you delivered?

Over 1,000 toolkits have been delivered so far, reaching miners in remote areas mining a wide variety of gem types across East Africa.

The toolkits consist of sturdy, hand-operated equipment — replacing broken or improvised farming tools commonly used in artisanal mining. These tools are suitable for mines that operate without powered machinery.
Many artisanal mines lack the infrastructure (power supply, maintenance ability, safety oversight) required for powered equipment. Hand tools reduce risk and are more sustainable for small-scale operations. Gem Legacy only distributes kits to mines that don’t use generators or have ongoing access to explosives.
Crystalline silica dust from mining and cutting gemstones can lead to silicosis — a serious, incurable lung disease. Depending on the gem type, some miners’ long-term health and ability to work safely are at risk without added safety measures.
Gem Legacy works with trusted local partners to assess need and prioritize mines that lack outside funding or resources — often among the lowest 20% of operations.
It can. Although Gem Legacy is not involved in the gem supply chain, it’s our hope that miners can increase their production and have more to offer in the marketplace as a result of our tools and training.
Absolutely. Training, safer tools, and ongoing community partnerships build skills and awareness that remain long after the initial toolkit delivery — supporting safer mining practices for years to come.
Donors can fund additional toolkits, protective equipment, safety training sessions, or help expand outreach to more mining regions. Each contribution strengthens miners’ safety, health, and ability to earn sustainably.

Support Safe & Effective Mining

Miner outreach and safety work is among the most cost-effective ways to create long-term change. Your support can help deliver toolkits, safety training, protective gear, and health education to miners who need it most.

Silicosis Prevention & Safety Training

Tanzanite mining comes with a unique health risk: silica dust. Crystalline silica is a mineral found naturally in the earth’s crust, and when rock is drilled or broken underground, the dust can be inhaled. Over time, this exposure can lead to silicosis — a serious, incurable lung disease that is fully preventable with the right knowledge and precautions.

Gem Legacy focuses its silicosis education specifically where the risk is greatest: Tanzanite mines, where enclosed shafts and fine dust make protection essential.

Our approach includes:

  1. Practical education, delivered on-siteMiners and mine owners learn how silica dust forms, why it’s harmful, and what simple practices reduce exposure — from ventilation improvements to safer drilling methods. We keep the training direct, respectful, and grounded in what miners need to stay safe in real working conditions.
  2. Clear guidance for dust controlThis training is designed to fit the realities of small, artisanal mining environments.
  3. Partnership with local government

We are pleased to be partnering with the Tanzanian government in implementing this education and safer mining practices.

Why This Matters

Silicosis develops slowly — often without symptoms at first — and by the time it’s detected, the damage is permanent. Education and prevention are the only effective tools. By pairing training with proper protective gear, we help miners protect their lungs, extend their working years, and safeguard their long-term wellbeing.
